Dental Implants FAQ

Answers to Common Questions About Tooth Implants in O’Fallon IL

Are There Advantages to Dental Implants?

Although dental implants aren’t the only way to replace a missing tooth or teeth, they do offer several advantages:

  • Dental implants are fixed in the jawbone and are permanent
  • They don’t shift or feel loose like dentures can
  • A single tooth implant doesn’t impact surrounding teeth
  • Dental implants are easy to clean compared to dentures and bridges
  • You never have to replace dental implants
  • Tooth implants look and perform like natural teeth

How Long Does Healing Take After Dental Implants?

After the dental implants are in place, your jawbone and gums will need several weeks to heal before the abutments and crowns are put in place. This gives the jaw and implant time to fuse together to provide a robust and stable base for the crown. In most cases, we can place a temporary crown so you don’t have a gap in your teeth before your dentist or prosthodontist installs the permanent crown. The total time from the first appointment to complete healing may be anywhere from 3 to 8 months.

Will Getting Dental Implants Hurt?

The implanting procedure isn’t painful because you are given a local anesthetic to numb the area. Once the anesthetic wears off, you may experience some mild pain and swelling for a day or two, but this is easily controlled with ice packs and over-the-counter medication.

Will I Need a Bone Graft for My Tooth Implants?

O’Fallon patients sometimes need a bone graft before having dental implants, particularly if the teeth have been missing for a long time or the patient has osteoporosis. The bone graft grows into the jawbone and helps the jaw grow new bone tissue to support the implant. If your tooth loss is recent and your jawbone is healthy, there is no need for a bone graft. Dr. Schillinger will do a thorough exam, including imaging, to determine whether bone grafts are needed.

How Much Do Dental Implants Cost?

There is no one-price answer to this question because each procedure is unique. The price varies based on jawbone’s condition, your overall health, how many teeth are replaced, their location, and other factors. Many insurance plans cover all or part of the cost of dental implant procedures.
